I was born in a laundromat.

Not really. It's a camper van Beethoven song.

Today I had 10 loads of laundry to do so I took my kids to the laundromat. They liked watching their clothes swirl around. I liked being done with my laundry in two hours.

What I didn't like was not knowing laundromat etiquette and I could feel myself violating it by looks from other people. I stuffed the dryers too full. I let the kids ride in the rolling carts. I used more than my share of counter space. I had too many baskets.

And no. Courdoroy wasn't there.

Suffer the children

As I was driving Henry to school today in the fog at 730, he said to me, "Mom, if I were you I would stay in my bed all morning and watch a movie while drinking hot chocolate."

So I did in his honor. It's a tough job.

Crisis of faith

Alice, age six, confronted me about Santa last Sunday. I was completely taken off guard and she caught me. I said some lame stuff about Christmas magic and she said "well, I think you and dad buy the presents." All I knew was that I couldn't tell her the truth because then she would be the kid in kindergarten who spills the beans about Santa. Henry came and did some backup for me and she scampered away.

An hour later I caught her on the computer searching "Is God real?" Because you know if Mom is lying about Santa then she must be lying about God also.

We are in so much trouble. My little baby is a budding atheist.

Looking for the end of the rainbow.

Things that have helped:
Blogging helps me organize thoughts.
Clarity that comes from the Holy Ghost.
Listening to the Book of Mormon on iPod even though I'm too fuzzy to concentrate.
Feeling no regrets.
Not being angry through faith.
I don't have to wonder why. I think I'm protected.
Carl and I both had foreshadowing of demise individually.
They were always facing each other in ultrasound pix. They needed to be together.
Feeling grateful I got to have Duncan and George for a short time.
Grateful I get to have them later.
Grateful I got to grow to love the babies instead of being mad or sad about being pregnant.
Telling my kids was a good idea so they could share in the joy along with the sorrow.
Feeling the outpouring of love from people.

And then there were none.

My heart is heavy.  My pregnancy has ended.  My two little guys are still a part of my family and are in all of our thoughts but they won't be joining us here on earth.

My amniotic sac ruptured on Thanksgiving night.  I had leaked fluid earlier in the pregnancy but everything had resolved, so I wasn't overly worried.  I went to the doctor the next day, and the babies were fine.  They ran some tests and I went home and rested.

Monday morning the perinatologist's office called me first thing.  They were really nice.  It was a clue.  I went in that morning and Baby A, who we call George, had met his demise.  They say that there.  Demise.  They can't say dead or alive because then that would be admitting the fetus is living.  Weird.  I was devastated, as you can imagine.

Baby B, Duncan, was still happily floating around and kicking, so I went home to my husband and we started making plans for our next step.  The doctor told me he had about a 25 percent chance of survival, so I was going to hold on to that. The effects on my health were dangerous because a demised fetus is an infection nightmare, and Carl was worried.

The next day, Tuesday, we went back to the doctor.  Duncan did not look good.  He barely had any fluid left because his sac had also ruptured, which the doctor had suspected the day before.  He was gone by the afternoon and I was prepped for surgery that evening.  The prepping was the worst part.  Seaweed in the cervix, avoid that at all costs, people.  Step away from the seaweed.

In the hospital, I basically had to go through labor without the drugs, which nobody told me and I'm mad about.  Finally they put me under and removed George and Duncan.  I went home that evening.

The babies will be cremated at a local mortuary and returned to us.  I don't know what is going to happen next.  Understandably my kids are traumatized, and I am worried about them.  We will need to have some sort of ceremony.  Has anyone done that?

I'm feeling fine now physically.  Pregnancy really knocked it out of me.

Mentally I am screwed up, which is to be expected.  I feel like I've been screwed up since I got pregnant. I was just coming to embrace our new little people and now they are gone.  Grief is a sneaky bastard.  I just don't know when it's going to hit me.

I'd like to tie this whole thing up in a package and be done with it, but I know it doesn't work like that.  I have learned about a million life lessons in this short time, and I'll be darned if I forget them.  I don't want to have to learn them again.

I have had so many good people helping me and caring about me and serving me.  People's generosity and goodwill have really changed my outlook in life.  I can feel the love.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much HF and the HG have helped me in these past few months.  I've had some wonderful sacred experiences and been comforted whenever I turned to prayer to ease my troubles.  I just wish it had ended differently.

Oh Boy!

Henry and Max are feeling especially grateful for their new baby brothers to be born in April.   Max wants to be king of the brothers and Henry can't decide which one is going to be his.

I am grateful that Carl is a good father to boys. Alice is glad she gets the other baby. Claire is grateful my clothing allowance won't be used up on baby girls.

Carl is just grateful he will be a scout dad for 20 more years...

Small Pleasures

My new-to-me ipad.  Makes looking up symptoms so much easier on the eyes.
Not sure why I find this so amusing.  Possibly the carrot appendages.
My increased couch time equals increased Alice play time.  I'm a captive audience to Lego castles and zoos.
The Safeway delivery guy.  He brings it right to the counter and then all I have to do is beg someone to put it away.
Alice and Aunt Camille wearing sparkly shirts from the Target kids department.  Just because Camille is married doesn't mean she has to grow up.

Favorite beverage:  Juice cut with club soda.  Not too sweet, helps settle my  stomach.  I would like to add something a little harder but I'm resisting.  Plus, I hear there's this thing called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
My contribution to the upcoming Thanksgiving dinner.  Ice cream turkey from Baskin  Robbins.  Freaky enough to please me.
Carl's tree measuring device.  A level, a straw, an angle thingie and a tape measure.  He invented it.  We're going to be millionaires.
Henry the Sea Slug and Charlotte and Fiona, the eels, in my mom's latest production, The Little Mermaid.  It's a costume extravaganza.
Little Mermaids dressed up to see The Little Mermaid.  Alice is sporting a Merida wig.  Close but no cigar.
Turns out Merida from Brave wore a curly mullet more suited to Garth from Wayne's World.
Baby boys named Teddy dressed in little girl pajamas.
Baby ducks.
Baby humans, of which I know the gender.  I'll tell Thursday.  Sometimes at night I google images of newborn twins so I can keep the faith.  I'm only 15 weeks and I feel like nine months.  Of course, I won't go that long, but still.  If this is what 15 weeks feels like, what does eight months feel like?  I don't even want to know.  Last night I looked up medically induced coma to see if it was an option for me. It isn't.

Follow directions on forehead.

I'm not posting details for the sake of privacy but he is fine. He's in a little bit of trouble for not sharing his morphine drip with me but I'm forgiving him since I couldn't figure out how to get an iv into myself anyway.

Mostly I just wanted to post the picture.  After my Grandma Fae died a long slow death I marched right down to my insurance guy and demanded some long term care insurance. He told me I was too young. I was 30.  Am I old enough yet? We've seen more doctors in the past three months than most old people. Carl and I feel right at home in waiting rooms except the OB places are filled with youngsters. The other day I saw a woman who looked about my age and I was happy. Then her pregnant daughter walked in. Dang.

2012. The year the our butts got kicked. Is it January yet?
