On Friday my mom arranged to pick my kids up after school. First she showed up at Henry's class following his party. The look of bewilderment on his face when he saw Lobster Grandma was delightful. He wasn't expecting it because she had never come to his school in costume before. She usually just goes to her local grandkids schools.
After the elementary school, I escorted Lobster Grandma over to the middle school to find Claire. We got there right as the kids were changing classes, and we were lucky enough to spot her and attract attention to ourselves. She was amused but grateful we didn't come into her classroom. Alas, the gratitude was premature.
Security at the middle school is tight, so Lobster Grandma and I had to ninja our way past the front office and we managed to find her classroom. Grandma entered the classroom, found Claire, and announced loudly that she was Claire's grandma while waving to the students and teacher. Claire turned as red as Grandma's face. The element of surprise was excellent.
After the middle school event, Lobster Grandma and I returned to my house where I donned my Tweedle Dee outfit in preparation for the high school tour of shame. Alas, Tweedle Dum declined to join us.
We didn't attempt to breech security at the high school. Lobster Grandma and I waited for Max to exit high school on a hill across an intersection that hundreds of students use. It was excellent. All of the kids could see us, and we could see them. When we saw someone we knew, we'd shout their names and wave. They pretended they hated it but then they hung around us while we waited for Max.
The best part of surprising Max was the agony he must have felt when he figured out who the weirdos on the hill were. His mental discomfort could only grow while he waited for the light to turn and he was forced to join us. When we were yelling his name and jumping up and down, it looked like he was going to turn around but I knew he wouldn't forgo his ride home from school. He was trapped.
I don't know why Max declined to hold our hands on the way back to the car.

This is priceless. Procrastinating at your blog is a favorite pass time of mine, esp. when the trick o treaters have died down and I am supposed to firm up my sharing time for tomorrow. Your kids will have some very, very funny memories.
Your FUPA as tweedle dum is scary. And how is Brigham Young Max's costume? Was he a polygamist? Don't you have to get a date first?
Please discuss how Fiona could not go to sleep the night before because she was so afraid Grandma was going to embarrass her in her lobster costume. Then when Grandma showed up without her costume at school to watch the parade Fiona ran up to her, kissed her and hugged her and told her she was the best Grandma ever for NOT embarrassing her. Mom wanted to run home and put the costume on. It's my job to educate Fiona on how embarrassment is family tradition.
This is my favorite Halloween blog post and has redeemed my helloween.
You guys are the BEST. Way to love life! Kinda makes me wish I had that in me too! :)
That Tweedle Dee costume is the greatest Halloween costume I have ever seen. I want to wear one.
The Tour De Shame is so fabulous. I can just picture Tweedle Dee and Gramma Lobster jumping up and down gleefully waiting for Max. I simply cannot imagine why Carl didn't want to join you as Tweedle Dum.
Where did Max find that T-shirt?
Oh, and I love how you have Max by the wrist.
Lord help me, I could never have survived in your family. No wonder you girls are all so fearless.
Sad thing is that I could wear that tweedle dee costume without the gut padding.
Wish Grandma had come to Seminary, we had pumpkin pancakes of which Max ate about a dozen.
Now this post DOES NOT look like Helloween to me...secretly you LOVVVE it, you know you do;)
i despise uncomfortable humiliation. is there any other type? this post makes me feel awkward. i wouldn't last a day in your family.
One more thing, my mom and I laughed for a long, long time over this post last night. My mother is in awe that this Grandma can has so much energy. Wow, this is legendary and the story is now bouncing back between Provo and Moraga ward! This is going down in history.
Perfect! I think any time your children need a consequence, you should just threaten them with Grandma Lobster.
Is grandma going to pay for the therapy your kids will need in adulthood.
Although I have threatened my own kids with my visiting their school in a dirty "wife-beater" shirt that is too small and short and ask as loud as possible where my "littleun" is (in my best southern accent.) Only to end it with, "If yer Ma and I divorced, would we still be brother and sister?"
This was a riot! What a dynamic duo of embarrasment! Mission accomplished.
I LOVE it! You and your mom RULE! I adore your sense of humor and think it is wonderful that you are passing it along to your kids.
High Schoolers should be shamed & humiliated by their parents regularly! Our very existence shames them, so why not have fun with it?!
Rock on, Lobster Grandma.
